Originally founded in 1885, Southampton have been playing English football fields for over 130 years. The club was first promoted into the top flight of football in 1966, where they’ve remained, pretty much uninterrupted since. The founding members of the Premier League, Southampton is one of England’s most beloved clubs.

The 2021/22 Premier League is coming to a close in a few weeks, so now is the perfect time to take a look through Southampton’s games during this season, and see how they’ve done. In the past few years, Southampton has not had the best of luck when it comes to the English Premier League. While they’re presence in the League has been consistent, they’ve also consistently been in the bottom half of it. Still, despite this, they remain one of England’s most beloved clubs, and loyal fans continue to follow and place bets on Southampton with increasing frequency.

The club has played 36 games thus far, and in this article, we are going to take a look at Southampton’s wins and losses this season, and point out some of the standouts.

Wins

Starting out on a positive note, we are first taking a look at the club’s victories during the 2021/22 Premier League. Out of the 36 games that Southampton has played, they have, sadly, only won 9, with the last one, also being the most impressive. On April 16, Southampton went up against Arsenal, one of England’s top teams, ranked 4th in the current season, winning the match in a score of 1 – 0. The victory is made all the more impressive, when we take into consideration that, the Arsenal team had the better plays.

Southampton’s star during the game was certainly Jan Bednarek, who managed to score the goal in the 44th minute of play, putting the Saint’s in the lead. From there, the club’s defense shone, blocking a number of the Gunner’s advances, and bringing home the proverbial bacon.

Apart from Arsenal, the Saints also won games against Everton, Aston Villa, and West Ham United. They also managed to pull off a tie with Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, etc.

Losses

But, as is with most cases, bad news often follows good. The nine games that Southampton won in the 2021/22 Premier League may have been spectacular, but it is a matter of fact that they lost much more than they won. Out of the 36 games they played, they lost 14 of them, with the most recent being a devastating 3 – 0 loss against Brentford, on May 7.

The Saints may have given it their all, and in many cases it seemed as though they might manage to pull ahead, but unfortunately for them, the Brentford team’s defenses were just too strong. It was Pontus Jansson, Yoane Wissa and Kristoffer Ajer who scored the three goals for the Bees, in the 13th, 14th, and 79th minute of the game, respectively.
