The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Sunday when hosts Qatar face Ecuador in the opening match.

Qatar have had 12 years to prepare for their first World Cup given they won the right to host this tournament that long ago. Their squad have even spent the past six months in training camp in preparation for this tournament.

Ecuador will be participating in their fourth World Cup, all this millennium. They have won four of their 10 matches in previous tournaments. The South American side finished in the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot in the CONMEBOL league, which included a 6-1 thrashing of Colombia and 4-2 victory over Uruguay. Interestingly, they have kept clean sheets in all six friendlies since, but not scored more than once in any of those games.

The Tricolor’s have a number of players who play or have played in some of Europe’s top leagues, including Enner Valencia, Moises Caicedo, Carlos Gruezo and Piero Hincapie.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s squad all play in their home league, which has produced one AFC Champions League winner this millennium – Al-Sadd back in 2011.

For anyone who can correctly predict the result of the opener their is good value in it because all three outcomes are odds against.

Personally, I think it’s one to take in-play but my feeling is that Ecuador will have much more quality than the hosts and perhaps the odds are fairly reflected as they are slight 6/5 favourites.
