Newcastle United travel to Arsenal on Tuesday in a battle teams in the top three to start 2023.

The Gunners have hit the ground running since the Premier League resumed from its World Cup break, beating West Ham United 3-1 and Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2.

Meanwhile, Newcastle went from comfortable 3-0 winners away to Leicester City on Boxing Day, to drawing 0-0 at home to Leeds United on New Year’s Eve. The latter ended their six-game winning streak in the Premier League.

Whilst Arsenal have dropped points in just two games this season it’s worth noting that the only time Newcastle lost was in the 98th minute away at Liverpool back in August. They have otherwise deserved their current UEFA Champions League spot, whcih includes victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, whilst only conceding five goals in their past 12 matches.

Mikel Arteta’s side have failed to keep clean sheets in both their matches since the return and I think that will be their achilles heel in this one. Sure, they may eventually break down the Newcastle defence but I don’t expect them to score many. I think one goal for the visitors in this one will get them a result and they’re more than capable of that.
